Engineer Peter Waweru Njenga is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Electricity Generating Company, KenGen, one of East Africa’s leading electricity generation firms.
Njenga is a registered professional engineer who has built a distinguished career for more than three decades in the energy sector.
In March 2025, he was appointed as the co-chair of the B20 Task Force on Energy Mix and Just Transition. This role placed him at the heart of global dialogue on sustainable energy.
Through his incredible role at the company, KenGen continues to prioritise renewable energy, with more than 93 per cent of the company’s installed capacity coming from clean sources such as hydropower.
Under his leadership, KenGen has gained global recognition. KenGen's expertise has been utilised by several African countries, including Zambia, Tanzania, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eswatini, for geothermal exploration.
During an interview in February this year, Njenga noted that KenGen had registered 79 per cent growth in net earnings, amounting to Ksh5.3 billion, which the company plans to reinvest in capacity expansion.
